Burgate Coffee House

Down the road of Burgate St, just before the turn towards the Marlowe, if you’re lucky enough you might just look to your left and be greeted by the Burgate Coffee House.

Initially, as I walked through the relatively small opening, compared to something of a modern Costa, I was hesitant. Is this really a place that deserved to be on the ‘Coffee Shop Hitlist’? But fear not – it was all in jest. Frankly, I have never been somewhere with such a small town atmosphere in the heart of a big city. It makes Canterbury feel small, and even local. Everyone welcomed at the door is a friend, not a customer here.

Curiously, the clientele here to me seems a peculiar mix of the local singletons amongst a mix of hipster- students – for once a compliment. Although, as a student myself perhaps I am biased. So are – I think you’ll fit in.

We’ve already mentioned the small town atmosphere, but there is something more here. The bustle and buzz of this wee place compels you to write, draw or read. If you could every describe somewhere as artsy – this might just be that place.

NB: You too should ask for the WiFi Password if you come.

As always, there has got to be mention as to the WiFi speed and I can confirm it’s one of the best as its very fast (~74 Mb/s). It’s free too – mild yet unapologetic moan to those still charging (need the WiFi).
