Guildford Harris + Hoole

After a trip away, it concluded in Guildford – the reasoning for which I’m still uncertain. Hungover and sleep deprived I was not in the best of places to truly enjoy a coffee shop. But for the brief hour that I was here – I fell in love with it. I’ve been to lots of coffee shops – each with their own niches. But this one, in particular, and being in student town – I was surrounded by students. Mature students to be fair.

Each person as I scanned the top floor of their coffee shop had a book and was enjoying that very moment. It was a time to be treasured – whether with a friend or alone. This was a wonderfully peaceful place – quite in contrast to the bustling high street just beyond the bay windows.

In my hands, I had a book I had actually recently collected from a Waterstones in Glasgow, from a trip a few days before. So, I felt very much at home. Getting stuck head first in the puzzling words of David Spiegelhalter. It was a place made by the people, rather than the place – a nice contrast to some of the places I visit.

I didn’t check the WiFi nor did I look for a power socket here. For me, this is very much a place frequented by those fans of the paper book. Not a screen. Having sat there – maybe I could see why some people prefer a real book.

For bikers, I’m not sure this is somewhere I would bike to. There are certainly places to kick down your kick stand nearby – but it properly won’t be one of your more scenic routes.
